Is Pasteurized milk better than raw milk? Which one should you choose?

Updated: Aug 21, 2020

The daunting question, “Is pasteurized milk better than raw milk?” might have struck you some time or the other especially if you have a family to take care of! While you may have heard experts share their opinions about the pros and cons of both - raw milk and pasteurized milk, the popular belief is that raw milk might be dangerous if consumed inappropriately whereas pasteurized milk is safe for consumption

What exactly is raw milk?

Raw milk is the direct milk from animals like cows, goats, sheep etc. Proponents of raw milk have stated that there are benefits to its consumption, including better flavor, better nutrition, and the building of a healthy immune system. However, the medical community has warned of the dangers, which include a risk of infection.

What is Pasteurization?

Pasteurization is a process that heats the milk at a specific temperature for a stipulated time; this ensures the heat kills all of the harmful bacteria while maintaining its nutrient value. This process makes it absolutely safe to drink Pasteurized Milk.

This process was first discovered by Louis Pasteur, whose research in the 1880s demonstrated that thermal processing would inactivate unwanted microorganisms in wine.

Today pasteurization is widely used in the dairy industry and other food processing industries to achieve food safety and preservation.

It is very important to consider the differences between pasteurized and raw milk. While there aren’t any significant nutritional differences, unpasteurized, or raw milk, can pose serious health risks. If the Raw Milk consumed has stayed unmonitored and subjected to fluctuations of temperatures while transporting from the farm to the end customer, there is an increased probability of the Milk getting spoiled and in turn causing harmful impact on health if consumed in this state.
